The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, located in the heart of La Jolla, in San Diego County, is one of only 16 nonprofit membership libraries in the United States. Founded in 1899, the Athenaeum provides library resources in music and the arts and presents over 200 programs and cultural events annually. This rare cultural institution offers a depth and accessibility of resources and programs found nowhere else in the region. The library, devoted exclusively to music and art, has an outstanding and ever-expanding collection of books, periodicals, reference material, compact discs, DVDs, sheet music, and librettos, as well as one of the most significant collections of artists' books in Southern California. The Athenaeum also presents an eclectic, year-round schedule of art exhibitions, concerts (classical, jazz, acoustics, and new music), lectures, studio art classes through its School of the Arts, tours, and special events. The library is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The library is closed on Sunday and Monday. Members can check out library materials for a modest annual fee. In 2016 the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library expanded its offerings to a satellite location in Logan Heights, the Athenaeum Art Center (AAC), which is being developed as a multicultural community center and hub for local artists. The AAC features an art school studio, a print studio, and an events space for exhibitions, lectures, and concerts. The AAC offers a wide variety of art classes from painting and sculpture to multimedia and printmaking through the School of the Arts. AAC, located at 1955 Julian Avenue in Logan Heights in the Bread & Salt complex, is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, and for scheduled programs and classes.

Faiya Fredman: Continuum (September 10 – November 5, 2022) presents an intimate view into the life's work of Faiya Fredman (1925-2020), whose seventy-year art career produced an ambitious and eclectic body of work driven by experimentation with unusual formats and unconventional materials. Her large and varied works include paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, installations, and artist’s books. A graduate of UCLA, Fredman juggled marriage and raising a family with the rigors of developing cutting-edge art. Her final bodies of work combine goddess imagery, vintage puppets, narrative forays into surreal worlds, and hybrid works combining graffiti with botanical imagery. Fredman’s works can be found in many public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and numerous others.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the Athenaeum will host an art activity day for elementary school students and their families, inspired by Faiya Fredman’s works and lifelong interests in childhood art education at the museum level and her philanthropy in that area. Activities will include: creating hand puppets from ordinary objects, making a lenticular, self-guided ‘seek & find’, and more.
